Local Spanish Teacher Pleads Guilty to Sex With Student

A high school Spanish teacher pleaded guilty on Friday to having an ongoing sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.

Toni Sutton admitted to two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and one count of oral copulation with a minor.

She’ll be sentenced July 25, where she faces up to 3 years in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender.

The 37-year-old teacher and volleyball coach at Crawford High School had a relationship with the student starting last summer when he was a sophomore, prosecutors said. It came to light in January through a series of text messages.

One of the victim’s parents alerted police after discovering the inappropriate communication between the teen -- one of her students from a previous year -- and the teacher.

Prosecutors with the San Diego County District Attorney's office said Sutton had sexual relations with the boy in various places, including her car, her home and her classroom.

Sutton submitted her resignation to the San Diego Unified School District last week, a district spokeswoman said Friday.
