Local Pearl Harbor Survivor Passes Away

Pearl Harbor survivor, Henry Mesa Cruz, passed away last week

A local American hero is being remembered this week for making his mark on history.

Local Pearl Harbor survivor, Henry Mesa Cruz, passed away of natural causes in Chula Vista on Mar. 12. He was 91 years old.

Cruz proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and survived the bombing of the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was one of only 334 servicemen to survive the bombing on that fateful day.

At the time of Cruz's passing last Monday, he was one of just 16 living USS Arizona survivors. The 15 remaining survivors are also U.S. Navy servicemen.
