Two San Diego hospitals have been slapped with $50,000 fines for putting patients lives at risk.

The hospitals are among 10 others in the state being punished by the California Department of Health. The fines were issued for errors that caused, or could have caused, serious injury or death.

Officials say a patient died at Palomar Medical Center after falling in the hospital and was lying on the floor for more than an hour before an employee found the patient.

Scripps Memorial in La Jolla was fined for a botched surgery after doctors left a towel inside a patient. The patient was hospitalized three more times before a second surgery was performed.

Both hospitals say they have taken steps to make sure the errors never happen again.
