Local Grad Takes Crown

A woman from Carlsbad will represent the state of California at the Miss Black USA pageant in August.

Tara Dale Sanders, 25, beat out 23 other contestants for the title of Miss Black California earlier this month in San Jose.

The pageant was the first she had entered since 2002 when she was crowned Miss Teenage California and Miss Teen of the Nation while a senior at Carlsbad High School.

"My family was so proud of me," she said about being crowned Miss Black California. "I wanted to do this for both of us (her mother and herself). ... It was a very emotional win."

Her father, C.C. Sanders, a retired Oceanside police sergeant and a community activist, said he couldn't be happier about her accomplishments.

"To win a state competition after a seven-year absence is almost unheard of," he said.
