Leader in San Diego's Black Community Dies

A long time leader within the African-American community of San Diego has died.

Debra Stephens died from complications from a stroke on Monday. Stephens was a board member of the San Diego County Urban League, a member of the San Diego Association of Black Journalists, the NAACP San Diego chapter, and the Catfish Club.

Stephens worked for the office of former San Diego Mayor Maureen O'Connor, The Children's Initiative, and for the San Diego Convention Center.

A longtime volunteer, Stephens dedicated her time to serving her community to improve the lives of children and families. A graduate of Lincoln High school, Stephens dedicated countless hours of time to Lincoln's students and recently was awarded a community award by Lincoln High School for her continuous support.

Her funeral is set for Friday, May 27 at 11 a.m. at the New Creation Church in City Heights.
