2 Die in Officer-Involved Shooting in City Heights

A fistfight at a family gathering Sunday escalated into a deadly shooting when one of the men involved went to his vehicle to retrieve a handgun, San Diego Police said.

In the end, an armed suspect and one of his victims were dead. Three others, ranging in age from their 20 to 60 years old, were injured.

The initial fight began just after 9 p.m. on Marlborough Avenue in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego.

A man walked away from a fistfight to his vehicle and returned with a gun, shooting multiple times into a courtyard of people, SDPD Capt. Brian Ahearn told NBC 7.

When police officers arrived, the suspect had a gun held to the head of a female hostage and was trying to pull her into his car, Ahearn said.

As officers tried to talk with suspect to drop his weapon, he held the weapon toward the victim and made several threats that he would hurt officers or the woman, police said.

The officer fired one round, killing the suspect.

Of the four victims injured by the gunman, one died at the hospital.

The victims and suspect have been identified but their names are not being released until family members are notified.
