But council members Wednesday stressed that Benson may have a tough time actually obtaining the permit she needs to host her proposed Women's World Longboard Championship in October. They cited difficulties with beach access, crowd control and parking concerns, adding that the city will scrutinize those topics during the expected 30- to 60-day city permit review process.
If Benson wins a city special events permit to use Swami's, it would only be the second time since 1967 that the famed surf break has played host to a competition, the paper reported.
The idea of a large competition at Swami's has divided North County's surfing community. Council members heard Wednesday night from nearly 30 people, with the majority opposed to the proposal.
