The man killed in a bloody officer involved shooting Friday afternoon in the East county has been identified as 33-year-old Jeromiah Paul Davis of El Cajon.

El Cajon police got a call shortly before noon Friday about a man running south on Avocado Boulevard carrying what witnesses described as a large Bowie knife.

The first officers to arrive said they ordered the man to stop and drop the knife but instead he turned and approached the officers. Police said they shot him several times with bean bags from a shotgun, which didn't seem to affect the man because he kept running.

Additional officers arrived and surrounded him at Avocado and Fuerte. Police said he refused to drop the weapon and charged one of them so they opened fire -- at least six shots -- and killed him.

"It was a barrage of gunfire," said a man who identified himself as Bob.

Davis was declared dead on the scene.
