Saturday Weddings Return to Clerk's Office in Kearny Mesa

The San Diego County Clerk’s office stopped Saturday wedding services in 2009 due to budgetary constraints, but now the service is back at the Kearny Mesa location

Wedding bells will ring once more on Saturdays at the San Diego County Clerk’s office in Kearny Mesa now that weekend marriage services have returned after a six-year hiatus.

San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk Ernie Dronenburg announced Wednesday that the Kearny Mesa location at 9225 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. will be rekindling its Saturday wedding services beginning on June 20.

Couples interested in obtaining a marriage license or having a civil ceremony there on a Saturday can do so by appointment only during the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dronenburg said that, for now, Saturday services will be offered at this location once a month – on every third Saturday.

“We want everyone to take advantage of this,” Dronenburg told NBC 7. “We’re starting to get reservations already – just by word-of-mouth.”

“This has been a long time coming and a goal of mine since I took office,” he added.

The Clerk’s office closed its doors to Saturday services in 2009 due to budgetary constraints. Dronenburg hopes the reinstatement of the services give couples more options and convenience.

In addition to wedding services, the Kearny Mesa office will also offer a limited number of other services on Saturdays including birth and death certificates and registering fictitious business name filings. Appointments can be made by calling (619) 237-0502.

Meanwhile, the Clerk’s office will continue offering its marriage services on weekdays at all other locations: the County Administration Center (1600 Pacific Highway); San Marcos (141 E. Carmel St.); Chula Vista (590 3rd Ave.); El Cajon (200 S. Magnolia Ave.).

All locations are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Services are available by appointment only from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All offices can accommodate between 10 and 20 guests at civil ceremonies. In addition, the downtown location offers ceremonies outside on scenic County grounds overlooking San Diego Bay. Those outdoor appointments are subject to staffing availability.

Couples will need to provide a witness for all civil marriage ceremonies. The office can provide one for couples for $18. The fee for a civil marriage ceremony is currently $88, while the fee for a marriage license is $70.
