Jury selection has begun in the San Diego murder trial of the son of former state Assembly speaker Fabian Nunez.
Esteban Nunez, 21, and co-defendant Ryan Jett are accused of stabbing San Diego Mesa College student Luis Santos, 22, in 2008.
Prosecutors claim that Esteban Nunez, Jett and two other men were angry because they were refused entry to a fraternity party and attacked Santos as he walked nearby.
Defense attorneys say the men acted in self-defense.
Esteban Nunez and Jett are charged with murder, assault, vandalism and conspiracy to destroy evidence.
Two other men, Rafael Garcia and Leshanor Thomas, have pleaded guilty to lesser charges.
