A Carlsbad driver who fled the scene of a fatal collision in 2009 that resulted in the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child is now headed to prison.

John Sudac was sentenced in court on Friday for his role in the deadly car accident that killed 24-year-old Yine Gonzalez and her unborn baby on January 4, 2009.

Police say Sudac crossed multiple lanes traveling northbound on Interstate-5 and hit the back of Gonzalez’s SUV, causing it to roll over multiple times. Sudac left the scene of the crash, but wound up turning himself in to police 18 hours later.

Now, more than three years later, a jury has convicted Sudac, who pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run charges associated with the fatal freeway crash.

The judge in the case sentenced Sudac on Friday to four years and eight months in prison.
