Interstate 5 Traffic Delayed by Crash of Oranges Truck

The damaged tractor trailer stopped traffic on two separate highways Tuesday.

A big rig carrying a load of oranges crashed Monday, causing delays along southbound Interstate 5 in the Carmel Valley area.

The driver felt a vibration from the tires and then veered into the crash barrels on SB I-5 at Carmel Valley Road at 1:40 a.m.

The truck and its trailor were seriously damaged as the vehicle scraped the cement barriers.

A Sig Alert was issued just before 3 a.m.

California Highway Patrol Officers diverted traffic while crews unloaded the truck's cargo and cleaned up a fuel leak.

A small army of tow trucks carried away truck parts.

Crews repaired the trailer's rear axle and put it on the back of a tow truck.

As of 7:30 a.m., the damaged trailer was cleared from southbound lanes of the I-5. Traffic along the popular north-south route along the coast slowly picked up.

However, less than 20 minutes later, the repaired axle broke down again on the interchange between I-805 and SR-52 east. Commuters were stuck for about 45 minutes.

Nine hours after the initial crash, the big rig was finally towed into a shop on Mission Gorge Place.
