Imperial Beach Closed to Swimmers, Surfers

Recent rainfall has pushed pollutants into the water off San Diego County's coast

Polluted runoff has closed Imperial Beach to swimmers and surfers Monday.

San Diego County health officials expanded the closure of the coastline near the U.S.-Mexico border due to sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River.

The recent rainfall has pushed pollutants into the water and northward ocean currents are carrying those pollutants to the areas along Imperial Beach’s shoreline.

The county Department of Environmental Health expanded the closure Saturday from the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge to the shoreline of Imperial Beach.

Warning signs to stay out of the water will be posted until measurements show it's safe for recreational use.
