Bloomington radio station WFIU reported on its website that the meters cost the city almost $1 million.

IPS manufactures its meters in San Diego. The meters take credit cards and work on solar power.

Bahr said the company also won a competitive bid to install sensors on upward of 1,000 meters in the San Francisco Bay Area town of Walnut Creek. The sensors can detect whether a space is occupied or unoccupied. The data collected can help city officials make informed decisions about parking restrictions or rates.

IPS says it has delivered more than 100,000 meters to more than 100 cities throughout North America. Earlier this spring, the company announced that the city of Manhattan Beach was installing an additional 420 of its smart parking meters, bringing the total to 1,200.

Other recent installations include Detroit (500 meters) and Omaha, Neb. (400 meters). Coming soon are 300 meters for Des Moines, Iowa.
