A transformer that sparked into flames is the cause of a power outage this morning that affected at least 437 homes and businesses in Coronado.
The transformer fire began at 4:23 a.m. in the alley between Orange Avenue and D Street and spread to a nearby telephone pole, a Heartland Fire dispatcher said.
Fire crews had to wait for SDG&E crews to cut the power before they could knock out the electrical blaze at around 6:25 a.m., the dispatcher said.
The power was turned off roughly between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. in the neighborhood between 7th Street to 10th Street and Orange Avenue to H Avenue.
By 11 a.m. power was back on for all but 99 customers, according to an outage map on SDG&E's website.
