Hundreds Of Jobs Could Be Coming To NASSCO

The shipyard may get a $1.5 billion contract.

Hundreds of jobs could be coming to San Diego.

NASSCO might get a large shipbuilding contract with the U.S. Navy, maybe even up to three contracts. The deal is could be worth up to  1.5 billion dollars.

There's been no formal announcement and NASSCO says the contract has not been signed and sealed.

The word about the deal came from someone who should know; Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations, spoke at a breakfast meeting in San Diego to kick off Fleet Week. Roughead said military landing platform ships, known as MLP's will be built here in San Diego.

The MLP is a floating pier at sea, used to offload equipment and supplies.

A NASSCO spokesman said the shipyard already has a $115 million contract to do design work for the vessel.

"[We are] hopeful, we will also receive the contract to build the ship, but it's too early to speculate," their spokesman said.
