Humane Society Offers Free Microchipping Before 4th of July

Fireworks and other loud noises can make pets run away, resulting in a typical spike in lost pets around the holiday

The San Diego Humane Society is offering free microchipping for pets until July 3, in anticipation of the 4th of July.

Shelters typically see an uptick in lost pets around the holiday due to fireworks and loud partying that can frighten animals. Pets have been known to jump fences to get away from the noises.

"There is typically a spike in the number of stray animals that we receive the day after a big holiday like the 4th of July," said Jennifer Brehler, Chief Operating Officer for San Diego Humane Society. "We want to help pet owners take precautions to protect their pets on these busy holidays, which is why we're offering free microchips so we're able to reunite pets with their families faster."

About the size of a grain of rice, the microchips are used by vets to find the owner’s contact information.

As well as microchipping and licensing, the Humane Society also uses Finding Rover, a facial recognition app to reunite dogs with their owners.

The Humane Society has locations in San Diego, Oceanside and Escondido. No appointment is necessary for microchipping, and they are open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
