As federal officials investigate the massacre at an LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida, there are ways people can help or get involved including here in San Diego

Dozens of bodies were slowly removed overnight from a popular Orlando gay club after a gunman sprayed the helpless crowd with bullets in violence that killed 49 people and devastated a city famous for family-friendly theme parks. Officials say that families of 24 of the victims from the massacre at a Florida nightclub have been notified.

β€œWe are simply devastated at the news of this horrific loss of life in Orlando. Unfortunately, our LGBT community is far too familiar with violence. This shooting – during LGBT Pride month – is now the deadliest mass shooting in United States history,” Dr. Delores A. Jacobs, the chief executive officer of The San Diego LGBT Community Center said.

On Monday, June 13, the San Diego LGBT community will come together to show their support of the victims affected Sunday. The #OrlandoStrong rally will take place at The Center on 3909 Centre St. with doors opening at 6:30p.m. This event will include a short program followed with a candlelit vigil stopping at the Hillcrest Pride Flag and ending at Rich’s nightclub. The LGBT Community Center said, β€œEveryone is welcome and encouraged to join us to stand together and unite in support of all those affected by this tragedy.” For more information, call (619) 692-2077.

Equality Florida has set up a victims' fund for those who would like to support the victims. For other ways to help, visit this website. The Orlando LGBT Center website can be found here.
