It has long been a place of hope and comfort for families of children with serious illnesses. Now, the Ronald McDonald House has expanded.

A celebration marked the grand opening of the 'new' house Saturday across from Rady Children's Hospital.

The new facility quadruples the size from 12-beds to 47.

Don Junken's six-year-old daughter Cassandra is being treated for Leukemia.

“The Ronald McDonald house provided us with a room to go to, laundry facilities, showers, meals, Internet. We got a lot of comfort from the employees, the staff at the Ronald McDonald house,” Junken said. “It’s a very important, very special place to us.”

The new center includes a 'family care center' and is expected to serve 20,000 families each year.
