Horse Trailer Crashes on I-15

Driver fell asleep at the wheel

A semi-truck driver fell asleep and crashed into the media south of Fallbrook on Interstate 15 Monday morning while he was transporting horses, reports our media partner North County Times.

The incident backed up traffic as far north as Temecula, officials said.

Vince Johnson, 46, was driving north on I-15 when the truck veered into the median around 7 a.m., just north of Lilac Road, said California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Parent.

Johnson was apparently not injured but was taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido for precautionary reasons, Parent said. The horses were not injured.

No lanes were blocked, but the crash caused delays on both sides of the interstate as crews repaired the guard-rail median, Parent said.

Repairs were completed and the scene cleared just before 10:30 a.m., according to the CHP website.
