1 Dead in Midway District Fight: SDPD

The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) launched a homicide investigation Thursday morning in the Midway District following a deadly fight between two men.

Just before 9:30 a.m., police confirmed an investigation was under way in the 3500 block of Sports Arena Boulevard, behind a Ralph's grocery store and a Target store.

SDPD Lt. Mike Hastings told NBC 7 two men were involved in an altercation in the area behind the businesses. Police officers arrived and broke up the fight, but one of the men then went into "medical distress," Lt. Hastings said.

Officers rendered aid to the man until paramedics arrived, but he died a short time later, the police department said.

The other man involved in this incident was questioned at the scene by investigators. He was not arrested, police confirmed.

Lt. Hastings said he does not believe any weapons were used in the fight.

"I believe it's just a fist fight, if you will. I don't believe there were any weapons involved in this one. Again, that might change, but I'm pretty comfortable it was a physical confrontation," he explained.

The investigation is ongoing. For now, police are interviewing witnesses and trying to figure out what led the men to fight in the first place. Anyone with information on this case should call the SDPD Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

The SDPD said an autopsy is scheduled in the next few days to determine the man's cause of death. His name has not yet been released by investigators, but police did say he was 47 years old.

The second man involved in the fight is in his 30s, Lt. Hastings said.
