Historic Lemon Grove Home Up for Auction

The historic "James House," built in 1931, will be sold by Caltrans on Nov. 8

A historic home in Lemon Grove is going up for sale through public auction, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced Thursday.

The โ€œJames House,โ€ located at 8336 Golden Ave., will be auctioned at the Caltrans District Office on Taylor Street on Nov. 8 beginning at 10 a.m.

Caltrans purchased the home as part of its right of way acquisition for a freeway project on State Route 125 but now the home is surplus to the stateโ€™s needs and will be sold.

According to Caltrans, the James House was built in 1931 and designed by noted San Diego architect Frank Hope Sr. The architecture style of the home is described as โ€œMonterey Colonial.โ€

The two-story 2,270-square-foot home boasts four bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, a basement, front and rear balconies and a two-car garage.

Caltrans said the house qualifies for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

Open House tours will be held at the property on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and on Oct. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

At the auction on Nov. 8, the minimum bid for the house will start at $161,000.
