A male hiker was airlifted off Cowles Mountain on Saturday morning and then taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital after sustaining a broken ankle during ascent.
The victim, whose identity was not known, was hiking with a male companion before falling and breaking his ankle about three-quarters of a mile from the base.
Cowles Mountain is the largest peak in the City of San Diego and is located in Mission Trails Regional Park between Santee and Lake Murray.
