Help Finish Chelsea's Run

A yearly race will be held to remember the slain teen

Join the King family and help finish Chelsea's run.

The King's hope to spread awareness and honor Chelsea's memory at the second annual Finish Chelsea's Run, at Balboa Park on March 5, 2011.

The 5k race will kick off on the western end of Balboa Park at 7:30 a.m. The race will have a festival with booths and entertainment.

The first run was organized shortly after Chelsea disappeared on Feb 25, 2010. Chelsea was a member of the Poway High School cross-country team and was last seen alive when she went for a run after school around Lake Hodges. After an extensive search, her body was found in a shallow grave near a tributary about 15 feet from the lake's southern shore.

In March, a group of runner's came together to organize a grassroots run to finish Chelsea's run through Lake Hodges and take back the park, more than 3500 people showed up to finish Chelsea's run. Now the King's will hold the run every year in Chelsea's memory.

The money raised will go towards the Chelsea's Light Foundation and towards the Sunflower Scholarship, which is awarded to children to help them achieve their academic and community enrichment goals.

The scholarship isn't just for students who perform well academically, but it is also for children who may not have the financial means to participate in extracurricular activities, like music or sports.

The Kings hope to increase awareness by eventually holding the race in several different cities across the United States. The family said Chelsea always believed in "going big or going home".

John Gardner III pled guilty to raping and killing Chelsea King and Amber DuBois on April 16, 2010.
