A student reported seeing a man with a handgun in the waistband of his pants inside the bathroom by the football field around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday. The student then told a teacher who reported the incident to the resource officer on campus.

On Wednesday, police now say the student "fabricated the incident" but they are not sure why the student lied.

The high school and two nearby schools were locked down for at least an hour while officers searched the campus.

The student who made the false report could face school discipline and/or criminal charges.

  • Helix Student Monday, Dec 29 at 1:50 PM FLAG COMMENT I agree with everyone above;the student made a HUGE mistake. Not only did he cause a diversion away from the rest of the county he has embarrased our school's name. Not to mention our fantastic pre-existing reputation. The lockdown was about an hour and fifteen minutes. I hope whoever did it enjoys his rewards.
  • Teacher Thursday, Dec 18 at 3:58 PM FLAG COMMENT Helix teachers, I'm ashamed of you. During a Lockdown, you were on the computer, continuing a final exam? Your job is to get down on the floor, away from the windows and keep quiet... and your students TOO! It is no joke when that Lockdown bell rings. Lives are at steak. Maybe even yours. DO YOUR JOB. (If I am mistaken in believing the reports from "students" on this page, I apologize).
  • Bon-Bon Thursday, Dec 18 at 3:02 PM FLAG COMMENT Seems someone made a mistake telling people...
  • Paige Wednesday, Dec 17 at 5:06 PM FLAG COMMENT I hope the police do charge him and that it is reported what it ends up costing him, both financially and legally, so that others don't think "Wow, what a great joke." I'm guessing he will be going to a different school now......maybe a juvenile court school......
