Harbor Drive Shut Down After Fatal Accident

Police believe the driver may have suffered from a medical condition

A driver apparently suffering from a medical condition struck and hit a pedestrian Saturday morning, police said.

The driver of a white Mercedes veered off the road at Park Blvd. at Harbor Dr. just before 7 a.m. and struck a transient, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Police say the transient died of his injuries, which involved extensive trauma to his head.

The driver was taken to the hospital, but is in good condition. Police do not believe the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but was probably suffering from some medical condition when he veered off the road.

No other vehicles were involved. Several street signs were knocked down and a manhole cover was removed in the accident.
