SDPD: Shooter Hiding in Mira Mesa Neighborhood

Shots were reported in the Mira Mesa area of San Diego Monday night, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) confirmed

San Diego Police Officers removed residents of a Mira Mesa home one-by-one and questioned them regarding a fatal shooting that occurred nearby Monday night.

An 18-year-old man died from injuries suffered in the shooting at Menkar Place and Markab Drive.

Residents in a two-block area were warned to shelter in place during the investigation.

The teenager was shot in the middle of the road at approximately 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Someone reported hearing four to five gunshots in the area, possibly near the Penasquitos Canyon, SDPD officers said.

The victim died at Sharp Memorial on Frost Street from a gunshot wound to the upper torso, police said.

SWAT officers surrounded a home at Menkar and Harlow and were attempting to remove nine adults and three children from the home, SDPD Lt. Ray Valentin said.

Valentin said they focused on the home because it was pointed out by a friend of the victim.

A suspect could be inside the home. Some of the residents have told officers the suspect could be in the home, others have said he’s not in the home.

Investigators say it does not appear that there is a relationship between the potential suspect and the victim.

The neighborhood is just south of the canyon, east of Camino Ruiz and west of Black Mountain Road.

Just after 11 a.m. Tuesday, the SWAT situation came to an end.

No other information was immediately available.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
