Gulls Fall in OT to Start Western Conference Final

Chicago wins Game 1 with an overtime goal

The Gulls joined the American Hockey League in 2015. But in four years they never met the Chicago Wolves, even though they're in the same Conference.

So the first time they've ever played is in the Calder Cup Western Conference Final. If Game 1 is any indication theyโ€™re going to put on quite a show.

The Gulls went to overtime to open their third straight post-season series but unlike the first two they didnโ€™t get the win. Youngster Cody Glass, the 6th overall pick in last yearโ€™s NHL Draft, scored in the extra period to give the Wolves a 5-4 win and a 1-0 series advantage.

Chicago led three times (1-0, 2-1, 3-2) in regulation but the Gulls tied the game each time. Corey Tropp got the first of the game with 28 seconds left in the 1st period. Maxime Comtois, all of 20 years old, scored with 1:09 left in the 2nd period to even it 2-2. Things got really fun in the 3rd period.

Andy Welinski scored to tie it 3-3 and 2:30 later Comtois got his second of the night to give San Diego its only lead at 4-3 but Nic Hague knotted it 4-4 with 3:05 to play to set up Glass to beat Jeff Glass (no relation) in OT.

This is the first time the Gulls have trailed in any of their three post-season series. They have a chance to come back to San Diego tied 1-1 when the puck drops on Game 2 on Saturday night.
