Authorities shut down Interstate-5 in both directions Friday after finding a grenade in San Clemente. Northbound lanes were reopened by 2 p.m.

The device was first sighted about 11:15 a.m. at Avenida Vista Hermosa.

“The device looks like a grenade or home made bomb,” Caltrans spokesperson Allen Shahood said.

The Orange County sheriff's bomb squad and Camp Pendleton Marines were on scene investigating, according to CHP officials.

Southbound traffic is being diverted off the freeway at the Avenida Vista Hermosa exit. Northbound traffic is being diverted out of the freeway at the Avenida de la Estrella exit. Traffic on Avenida Vista Hermosa is also being shut down.
