A gravel spill on westbound state Route 52 in the Kearny Mesa area forced California Highway Patrol to shut down all lanes for hours Tuesday as crews cleaned up the mess.
A dump truck filled with gravel lost its load just west of the SR-163 junction at about 4:45 a.m. and caused at least four vehicles to skid across the freeway, CHP said.
There were some minor crashes and a few cars went off the road, CHP said. Gravel spilled across at least 100 yards of the freeway.
A Sig Alert was issued and two street sweepers were called to clear the roadway of a "significant" amount of rocks, CHP said.
All lanes were shut down and traffic was diverted to I-15 or off the freeway at Kearny Villa Road. There was no access to SR-163, CHP said.
It was not clear what caused the gravel spill but a CHP officer at the scene said it appeared the dump truck had a hatch at the bottom that came loose.
CHP said if the driver was found to be in violation of any regulations he would be cited. The incident remains under investigation.

By 6:30 a.m., one lane was reopened and traffic was no longer being re-routed. The full roadway would reopened shortly after 7 a.m.
