When your boss flies out of town early and shows up somewhere else thanking people for the "new opportunity," it sounds like a done deal.

After weeks of negotiations, the Houston school board is expected to officially hire the superintendent the San Diego Unified School District on Thursday, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The board will offer Terry Grier a multiyear contract that is likely to top $400,000 a year in salary and perks over time, the paper reported.
Grier traveled to Houston last month and took part in a news conference called by the Houston Independent School District.

In the video, Grier smiles as he shakes hands with the board.

"I think there is a wonderful opportunity here," he said to the crowd.

The news has caused anxiety in the district with several school board members including Katherine Nakamura who told voiceofsandiego "I'm at a loss for words."

HISD Trustee Paula Harris told the Houston Chronicle she expects the board to unanimously appoint Grier at its 5 p.m. meeting Thursday.
