Good Samaritan Receives $700 Found in Hospital

Unclaimed cash awarded to Man who found it

A man who found $700 in a hospital and turned the money in to police was awarded for his honesty Friday, a spokesperson with the police said.

The construction worker found the cash on June 30 at Sharp Hospital in Chula Vista. He brought it to a hospital staff member, who turned the money over to police.

"It's very rare for people to turn money in -- let alone that much money," said Captain Gary Wedge of the Chula Vista Police Department.

Police looked for the owner of the cash, publishing the details in the Chula Vista Star News. After the required 90-day wait period, the money remained unclaimed.

CVPD notified the man who first turned the money in and awarded him with the money on Friday.

“Even in challenging economic times, people do the right thing,” Wedge said.

The man asked that police not release his name to the public -- likely out of humility, Wedge guessed.
