An Encinitas man, described by friends as someone who would give a stranger the shirt off his back, died while trying to help a stranded driver.

Kevin Buckmaster, 49, stopped along Encinitas Boulevard at about 8 a.m. Saturday to help two strangers put gas into their car.

When Buckmaster crossed the street after helping the driver, he was hit by another car traveling eastbound, according to San Diego County sheriff's deputies. Emergency crews took Buckmaster to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla but he died shortly after.

The driver of the car that hit Buckmaster was also an Encinitas resident and was not injured in the crash.

Buckmaster worked at the La Costa Albertsons and had rented a trailer from Alveretta McMichael for the past 17 years. She said the two were like family.

"He would give the shirt off his back to anybody. I couldn't believe it. It’s hard for me to believe,” said McMichael.

“He would give you anything he had, just real nice guy,” she said.
