Girl, Witness Report Abduction Attempt

South Bay police said a 12-year-old girl said she had a frightening experience Thursday.

According to police, the girl was walking to school at 8 a.m. near the intersection of Palomar Street and Third Avenue when she stopped and waited for a light to change. She told police that a car at a gas station across the street honked at her and that the driver motioned her to come over. The man then drove over and stopped next to the girl, then told her, in Spanish, "Come here." When the girl refused, the suspect got out of his car and rushed the child, who fled across the street to a woman who witnessed the incident.

Police said the abduction suspect froze at that moment, staring at the child and the woman. After the girl told the woman she didn't know the man, the pair quickly walked to the school, where they reported the incident.

The witnesses said the suspect was a Latino man who was about 50 years old. He was about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed more than 200 pounds, with a large belly. He was clean-shaven and wore a plain tan baseball cap, a tan or green long-sleeved polo shirt, tan shorts and sandals with socks. He was driving a dirty '80s four-door green/blue sedan that was possibly a Honda, police said.

Anybody with information about the case is being urged to call Chula Vista police.
