I-5 at Genesee Ave. Exit to Close for Overnight Construction

Starting on August 6 at 9 p.m., traffic will be redirected in order to continue construction.

The Genesee Ave. exit on Interstate 5 (I-5) will be closed overnight starting Saturday as Caltrans continues to demolish and remove the old freeway overpass.

The overnight closures will begin at 9 p.m. Caltrans will close both northbound and southbound lanes on I-5 until 9 a.m. on Aug. 7. Northbound lanes will be redirected to eastbound Interstate 8 and eastbound State Route 52 freeways. Southbound lanes will be detoured to Interstate 805.

From Aug. 8 through Aug. 12, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., there will be different closures on I-5 at Genesee Avenue.

At 11:30 p.m., traffic will be rerouted to the Genesee Avenue off-ramp and re-enter I-5 using the on-ramp. There will also be reduced lanes on Genesee Avenue.

Motorists and bicyclists are encouraged to steer clear of this area during the work hours listed. Pedestrian access is closed throughout the construction.

This $105 million project will replace the six-lane Genesee Avenue overpass with a ten-lane structure. This will include vehicle lanes, new bike lanes and sidewalks, and better accommodate current and future traffic demands in the San Diego region.

This project is expected to be completed in 2017, according to Caltrans.
