The Perla Del Caribe, the newest vessel to come out of the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard, left San Diego on Jan. 26 for the Panama Canal and Jacksonville, Fla.
The General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) subsidiary delivered the container ship to client TOTE Maritime on Jan. 22. Financial terms of the two-ship contract were not disclosed.
The 764-foot-long vessel is the sister ship to the Isla Bella, which NASSCO delivered in October and is now in service between Puerto Rico and Florida.
Both ships are notable because they run on liquefied natural gas, which burns cleaner than conventional fuel.
NASSCO builds new ships for both government and commercial clients. U.S. law works in NASSCO’s favor because it calls for ships traveling between U.S. ports to be built domestically.
The Barrio Logan yard also does U.S. Navy ship repair work.
