A construction crew struck a gas pipe Wednesday afternoon, and the gas leakage forced state Route 76 to be closed in both directions near Jeffries Ranch Road in Oceanside, a Caltrans spokesman said.

The sig alert was issued at about 1:53 p.m. between Vista Way and Melrose Drive.

California Highway Patrol officers were on scene to help navigate traffic. As of 3:40 p.m., no detour has been posted.

The route is expected to remain closed into the evening until San Diego Gas and Electric crews can turn off the gas from the leaking pipe.

The crew, contracted by Caltrans, is working on an SR-76 project to widen the lanes between Melrose Drive and South Mission Road.
