Carlsbad City Treasurer Harold "Mac" McSherry committed suicide in his own office after facing increasing pain from a brain tumor, according to the North County Times.

The 59-year-old told people weeks ago that he would be traveling for a while and hard to reach by telephone, friends told the paper.

Many of those closest to McSherry said that they were stunned by his death, both because of his intensely upbeat attitude toward life and because he was a cancer survivor who fought off an advanced stage of melanoma a decade ago.

McSherry's body was discovered Wednesday. The county medical examiner's office said its preliminary investigation suggests McSherry "appeared to have committed suicide," but an examination has not yet been completed.

There was no suspicion of foul play, police said.
