Heavy Rain Causes Road Closures Across San Diego

Many streets across the county were shut down to traffic after heavy rain pounded San Diego this week, causing floods and damage in some areas

This week's powerful El Nino storms across San Diego County prompted officials to temporarily shut down traffic along some roads, especially in flood-prone communities.

Due to persistent flooding created by the relentless rain, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) announced it was temporarily closing some streets. The road closures began Wednesday and changed as the week, and rain, went on.

As of 10 a.m. Friday, this was the latest list of road closures across San Diego, according to the police department:

Mission Valley/Mission Valley East Area
5300 Mission Center Road (police say the right lane for Westbound traffic is still blocked, but other lanes in this area are operable)

Sorrento Valley
5600 Carroll Canyon Road
Roselle Street/Estuary Way

Fashion Valley/Mission Valley Area
Camino De La Reina, between Camino De La Siesta & Avenida Del Rio
Fashion Valley Road, between Hotel Circle North & Riverwalk Drive

Otay Mesa
La Media Road/Airway Road

Tijuana River Valley
Saturn Boulevard/ Sunset Avenue

La Jolla Shores
2000 Avenida De La Playa

Talmadge
Aldine Drive/Fairmount Avenue

Teralta West
4100 41st Street (East Alley)

Barrio Logan
2200 Harbor Drive
Torrey Hills Sorrento Valley Road at Carmel Mountain Road
 

Meanwhile, the San Diego County Department of Public Works also released a list of road/area closures due to flooding in San Diego, effective as of 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

Those closures include:

  • Fallbrook: Main Street from Ammunition to Fallbrook Street due to water main break; Aviation from S. Mission to Old Stage due to water main break
  • Jamacha: Willow Glen Drive from Hillsdale to Willow Glen Way due to a rock/mudslide
  • Julian: Snow chains required on Sunrise Highway
  • Palomar Mountain: Chains are required
  • Ramona: Hunter Street between Kelly and Raymond Avenue due to flooding
