Fishermen Rescued From Sinking Boat

Men airlifted to safety off coast of Point Loma

The Coast Guard rescued eight fishermen from their sinking fishing boat 30 miles south of Point Loma Saturday afternoon.

Officials received a distress call from the owner of the 45-foot fishing boat just after 10:30 a.m.

Sector San Diego immediately issued an urgent broadcast to mariners in the area to assist the crew of the Osprey.

A Coast Guard rescue helicopter arrived on scene shortly after the initial call and lowered a dewatering pump to the crew, but the pump was unable to keep up with the water.

The rescue crew hoisted all eight men after the Osprey began to emit black smoke from its engine compartment.

It is unclear what caused the fire in the engine, Coast Guard officials said.

The Osprey sunk about 30 minutes after the men were rescued.

No injuries were reported.
