Firefighters Battle Multiple Fires in Alpine

Firefighters are mopping up hot spots from several vegetation fires that broke out along the I-8 freeway between Dunbar Lane and Alpine Blvd Tuesday afternoon.

Four separate fires were reported just after 2:33 p.m., According to Roxanne Provaznik with CAL FIRE.

Several people stopped their cars and tried to put the fires out before firefighters arrived, California Highway Patrol officers said.

Sheriff’s deputies and CHP officers closed both lanes of traffic for just over an hour. Two of the fires were reportedly in the center divide at Tavern Road and one at Dunbar Lane.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fires by 3:40 p.m., Provaznik said.

According to CAL FIRE, six engines, two fire crews, one bulldozer, two air tankers, two helicopters, and 75 firefighters worked to put out the fires.

The cause is still under investigation.
