Fire at Restaurant Under Investigation

A fire sparked behind a seafood restaurant at a Lemon Grove strip mall

Officials are investigating a fire that broke out behind a restaurant in a Lemon Grove strip mall Saturday morning.

The fire began just past 3 a.m. at the back of Mariscos Negro Durazo, a Mexican seafood restaurant located near a cluster of commercial buildings on the 6900 block of Federal Boulevard.

Sheriffs arrived at the scene first and assisted in safely evacuating three occupants who were asleep in the upstairs loft above the restaurant.

No one was injured, officials confirmed.

Fire crews extinguished the flames, which stemmed from the exterior rear of the building. The fire had also spread to an attic space but did not spread to adjacent buildings in the strip mall.

Clean-up crews filled Mariscos Negro Durazo Saturday morning. According to an employee, the fire-damaged eatery will remain closed until at least Monday.

Officials said Sheriff’s Bomb and Arson investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, which they believe was incendiary in nature.
