Fire Spreads Through Walls of Apartment

Oceanside apartment fire evacuates nine residents

An apartment complex in Oceanside was ablaze Sunday after a fire spread through the walls and ducts of the building.

Firefighters responded to the fire on 127 Avenida Las Brisas near the intersection of Mission Ave. and Old Grove at about 3 p.m. Sunday, said Chief Peter Lawrence with the Oceanside Fire Department.

No residents were injured in the fire, but it caused $70,000 of damage to the structure and contents inside.

Firefighters had to cut holes in the roof to allow heat and gasses to escape. They found that the majority of the fire was in the ducts between the units, as well as in the floor and in the attic.

The fire was contained 20 minutes after the arrival of the first firefighters.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but authorities believe the fire started below the affected units where the water heater was located.

Eight adults and one child lived in the building. Red Cross arrived at the scene to provide temporary housing for them.
