A two-story condo burned at 12972 Caminto del Canto Rd. in Torrey Pines. San Diego Fire Department responded to the fire, but had a little help from people nearby.
Five neighbors assisted firefighters by using garden hoses to douse the flames. One neighbor, Jeff P., said he was veteran firefighter. He lived two blocks away and responded immediately when he saw the smoke.
"There was intensive smoke, this building was heavily involved," he said. "'Code Red' as we used to call it in my day."
The people who lived in the unit were not home, as the apartment was being treated for flood damage. Neighbors were evacuated as firefighters worked to contain the fire.
Damage to the home was roughly $1.4 million, including $900,000 to the structure and $500k to the contents. The condos on each side sustained $450,000 total loss.
SDFD is investigating the cause.
