San Diego Fire Threatens Homes

Fire threatens homes near 47th and Thorn in Chollas Creek.
San Diego firefighters beat down a fast-moving brush fire burning in a canyon in Chollas Creek Monday.
At 4:30 p.m., fire crews arrived to the area near 47th Street and Thorn Street where two to three homes were in the direct line of a canyon fire. Euclid Avenue was shut down to traffic between Home Avenue and Thorn Street.
San Diego Fire Dept. spokesperson Maurice Luque said Copter 2 was able to complete a number of drops, knocking down the fire so that ground crews could move in. Luque credits those drops and the facte that the fire wasn't in high brush as the main reason the fire was knocked down within 45 minutes.
According to Luque, this area is considered a high fire hazard zone because the vegetation in some of these canyons hasn't burned in 40 or 50 years.
The fire was contained by 5:15 p.m. Fire crews will stay on the scene to mop up any hot spots.
