Explosive Devices Found on Clairemont School Campus

Fire investigators called in hazmat to investigate but said school children were not in danger

Someone threw two small handmade explosive devices into a garbage can near a San Diego elementary school.

The two plastic bottles were discovered Monday around 8:30 a.m. on the grounds of Lafayette Elementary School on Printwood Way in Clairemont.

Capt. Eric Kelley with San Diego Fire Metro Arson Strike Team Bomb Squad described them as “overpressure devices” meaning they are designed to create a loud bang and can spread chemicals.

Because the chemicals can be caustic, firefighters called in the hazmat team to take a look.

Kelley said the bottles appeared to have been in the garbage can for a while and may have been left there over the weekend.

The school was not evacuated. Kelley said there was no danger to the school children.

Only one of the bottles exploded before firefighters arrived. The hazmat team will test residual chemicals to help investigators put together a criminal case.

Kelley said making an explosive device is a felony.
