Firefighter, Giving First Aid, Stabbed by Man With Butcher Knife

The knife-wielding suspect attacked the firefighter on Euclid Avenue in National City Friday

A firefighter in the middle of rendering first aid to a woman who had fallen near a home in National City Friday was stabbed by the woman's son, armed butcher knife.

The National City Police Department (NCPD) said a crew with the National City Fire Department (NCFD) responded to an emergency call around 1:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of Euclid Avenue where a woman had suffered a head injury from some sort of fall.

As an NCFD firefighter tended to the victim outside the home, the woman's 34-year-old son attacked the firefighter, stabbing him on his upper body. The suspect also stabbed another woman who was outside. He then ran inside the house.

Firefighters called police for backup; when officers arrived, they called out for the man to come outside. The stabbing suspect walked out, unarmed, and was arrested without incident by police.

The investigation is ongoing. It is unclear, at this point, why the suspect attacked the firefighter who was helping his mother.

The firefighter and the female stabbing victim were both taken to local hospitals and are both expected to recover.

No further details were released, including the name of the firefighter.
