In the face of recession and canceled Fourth of July fireworks in Oceanside, Escondido is fighting back, reports the North County Times.

Funding was cut from other programs, such as First Night Escondido, the Grape Day Festival, and high school Grad Nites in order to fund others such as the display.

"The Fourth of July is an important tradition," Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler said last week. "We need to say that we are proud to be Americans."

The fireworks are estimated to cost $30,000, including $11,000 for security for the event.
