Escondido Teacher Accused of Classroom Sex Acts

1 alleged incident occured while Valley High students watched movie

An Escondido high school teacher was arrested Friday for having a 16-month relationship with a student that included multiple sexual incidents inside his classroom, police said.

Valley High School teacher Mario Humerez, 35 and of San Marcos, was arrested at a coffee house on the 400 Block of North Escondido Boulevard where Humerez believed he was meeting the 19-year-old female victim, police said.

The suspected relationship began in September 2007 when the accuser was 16. The teacher and student had two incidents of sexual contact, police said.

The first incident of digital penetration occurred toward the end of 2008 and inside Humerez's classroom while students watched a movie, police said. The second alleged incident took place in the beginning of 2009 and involved oral copulation.

Escondido police do not suspect Humerez and his accuser to have engaged in sexual intercourse.

Humerez was interviewed at the Escondido Police Department and booked at the Vista Detention Facility on charges of oral copulation of a minor and sexual penetration of a minor.

Humerez teaches AVID at Valley High. The program is designed to improve students' candidacy and readiness for attending four-year universities.

Anyone with information about a crime that may have been committed by Humerez is asked to contact Escondido police detective Julie Barnes at (619) 839-4758.
