Lockdown Lifted at Encinitas Schools

Early reports suggested a gunman spotted near campus

The lockdown affecting four Encinitas schools has been lifted.

Law enforcement officers responded to the report of a gunman spotted near a school campus in Encinitas early Thursday.

Four schools were placed on lockdown including Ocean Knoll Elementary, San Dieguito Academy, Oak Crest Middle School and St. John's Preschool.

San Diego County Sheriff's Deputies ordered the schools on lockdown as a precaution after the report of a transient man seen with a gun in a canyon along Melba Road.

Deputies have not located the alleged gunman.

Deputies lifted the lockdown just before 10 a.m. after they said they located the man and determined he had been carrying fake ammunition.
